Ball python heat?

http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/15...c0f669ddeb.jpghttp://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/15...3e1afff113.jpg this is my balls setup, we have a mini uth and 2 heat lights, red and blue... we want to switch to just a heating pad under the tank, is that a good idea, we are going to buy the thermometer to stick to it to read the temp all the time; but I just want to know opinions on if only a heating pad is a good idea

That depends on the room temp. If the room is not heated I doubt your ambient temps will be high enough.

UTHs do not heat the air.

The room Sits at about 75 right now

We plan to run the lights only during the day, but at night we want to turn them off

I only use a uth myself but that's because my room ambient temp is already high 70's and inside the tank it keeps 80-83f all the time . So as long as your room ambient is fine then it's okay.

If you don't have one already, get a digital thermometer/hygrometer. The stick on thermometers are pretty inaccurate and if the snake knocks it down and gets stuck to it, it can cause some bad damage.

i have learned that ambient temp isn't quite as important as the hot spot. i know of some breeders that keep their ambient temps quite cool (as low as 66°F) and they get their best clutches with lower ambient. i keep my ambient around 75 and my hot spot between 90-95.

Then you should also know that there are breeders who do not use a hot spot at all and rely solely on ambient temperatures. They are highly successful as well.

Personally, I keep my snake room at 78 F and provide a warm spot of 90 F. That's what has worked for me so far. It's all about knowing what your snakes need and determining the best way for you to provide them with it.
