Prolapsed rectum help

This afternoon I took my BP out for feeding and noticed that he appears to have a prolapsed rectum. I did some research and soaked him in a sugar bath for about 20 minutes, then put some sugar paste on the prolapse. This helped bring the swelling down so I could attempt to push it back in (very gently) with my finger. However, because he was straining, it kept popping back out right away. The prolapse was becoming irritated and red, and he seemed to be becoming very stressed, so I put him back in his tank.
I replaced the bedding in his tank with damp paper towels to help keep the prolapse clean and moist and put some Vaseline on it,
What next steps should I take? I'm not very familiar with reptiles, and all I know comes from reading. There aren't any herp vets in my area, eiher, from the research I've done.

Where are you? Maybe some of our members know of a good vet in the area.

Western Mass...I'm also concerned about the cost, though, and if surgery is necessary, I don't know how successful it would be on a small BP.

I believe I have remedied the problem. I reapplied the sugar solution and was able to push the rectum back in, and he seems much better now.

If I'm not mistaken the general vet treatment for prolapse isn't very invasive and could probably be performed on a small snake.

Problems like prolapse often happen multiple times if an animal is prone to it; you may want to go ahead and find a nearby vet just in case it happens again and won't go back in.

Depends on the prolapse, severe ones or those that keep re-occurring may require surgery.
