Starter Stock- what project would you do with these?
So I am new to BPs, but not new to snakes, but I had no idea how the morphs of these snakes has so evolved over the past decade! I've been doing my research and have the snakes shown below in a rack for now with some display cages being built to observe behavior and to be able to better "hang out" with these awesome snakes!
Below are my starter snakes and I was thinking about stopping by the Orlando show next weekend to pick up one more.
I know everyone has an opinion, but what is yours? I have a couple of sweet males with a couple with triple sets of morph possibilities. Wondering maybe add one other female to the mix. Most likely only the firefly female will be ready by next fall as she is at 1000 grams now and the boys should all be ready by then with regular feeding. The fire pin has a nice head start, but uncertain if she'll be ready as she is only sitting at about 500 grams today.
Let me know what you think! New here on this forum, but happy to have found ya'll.
Re: Starter Stock- what project would you do with these?
Welcome to the forum!
Your snakes are
1.0 Fire Orange Dream Het Genetic Stripe
1.0 Spinner Blast
1.0 Pastel Het Pie
0.2 Firefly
0.1 Pastel Pie
0.1 Fire Pinstripe
0.1 Pastel Het Genetic Stripe
0.1 Butter Orange Dream Het Genetic Stripe
Here is what I would mate:
Fire Orange Dream Het Genetic Stripe x Butter Orange Dream Het Genetic Stripe
Fire Orange Dream Het Genetic Stripe x Pastel Het Genetic Stripe
The above two matings give a chance of genetic stripes to add to the mix of morphs.
Pastel Het Pie x Pastel Pie
Pastel Het Pie x Firefly
Spinner Blast x Fire Pinstripe
Spinner Blast x Firefly
IMO, those matings give a good mix of morphs among the babies. Use a good genetics calculator to determine the expected results.
That gives two females to each male. I don't see any great need to add another female.
Those matings are strictly my opinion. Your mileage may vary.
Re: Starter Stock- what project would you do with these?
At first I had thought about something like this:
First Breeding
1. Spinner Blast X Piebald
2. Pastel Het Piebald X Pastel Het GS
3. Fire OD Het GS X Butter OD Het GS
4. Spinner Blast X Firefly
5. Fire OD Het GS X Firefly
6. Spinner Blast X Fire Pin
I was thinking about getting 100% het piebald as a result of #1 above and then breeding the het piebalds to see if I could end up with some amazing piebald.
Same idea with #2 concerning GS, but of course this would be a long term project.
The possibilities are endless as you know...and I like your pairings as well that with a little luck will give me piebalds and possibly super pastel pies as well as GS right off the bat. My idea, it seems would take quite a bit of luck on the pie combo idea. To speed things along, I think I would need a GS and/or Pie (not het) but not sure I really want to go there. Have plenty invested in this little obsession of mine already!
