BPs require an ambient temperature of 80 degrees and a hot spot of 90 degrees. They do not require a day/night cycle or UV lamps. An under tank heater provides the 90 degree hot spot. BUT it does not heat the ambient air, just the bottom of the tank. Therefore, people use heat lamps (such as Infrared or Ceramic Heat Emitters) to raise the ambient temperature of their tank or tub, rather than heating the entire room to 80 deg.

HOWEVER, lamps are less ideal because they drain your humidity. If you have other methods to keep your ambient temps at 80 (such as heating the room with a space heater), I'd skip the lamp.

BTW, have you read the Caresheet and seen this tutorial? You can't go wrong if you follow those instructions to set up your enclosure!

I heat my reptile room with a space heater and it works really well. May be overkill for someone with just one reptile, but if you have more (or think you're going to want more) it's a great idea.
