Breeding

I just have a quick question, my local breeder gave me a snake, I'm unsure of exactly what he is I think Mojave bumblebee pic below...the snake has had surgery to have one of his hemipenes (unsure of if that's spelled correct or not) removed, I was just wondering if this boy would ever be able to be bred again?

I'm not very good with morphs yet so I can't help you there, but he does look very thin. You can see his backbone easily. Beautiful boy though [emoji216][emoji4]

im not at all concerned that he looks thin. I am concerned that if he has had surgery on his reproductive organs that his ability to breed may be compromised. Also, I am concerned that it might not be safe for him to breed.

If you can, why not contact the vet that did the procedure?

Looks like a mojave bumblebee.

I assume the breeder gave him to you because he was no longer capable of safe or reliable breeding. A multigene male like that is a valuable component of a breeding colony and would be hard to justify giving away for free otherwise.

I'm going with this. I know a few people who give away healthy but unbreedable animals to pet homes, with full disclosure that the critter should not (e.g. Desert females) or can not be bred.

He did tell me he could breed, just not this season. I was just wondering if it was safe to do so in the future? IF I ever did decide to breed my snakes.
This is what happened, he has been breeding this male all season and when he finished he somehow didn't get the one hemipene back in and it basically dried up, so he took him to the vet and had it surgically removed (which is why I think he's a tad underweight at this point) this all happened about 3 weeks ago, he's healed completely from surgery.

And to clarify a little more on the giving away of him, it was my birthday and I have 5 other snakes 4 of which have came from him, 2 from his personal collection that he had no intention of selling but did just because it was me. He gave this snake to me as a birthday present lol.

I am going to go with : no he will not be able to breed. The forked penis is used to lock into the female, one just would not hold on to her. I am going with no penis = no babies :)

Thanks, I will probably never breed, but it's just nice to know a definite answer in case I ever did decide to breed. Lol.

Males only use one hemi pene to lock a female. Males are generally smaller than females and could never/rarely have both hemi penes in a female at once due to the spacing differences between the male's hemi penes and the female. This is how 500g males lock 2500g females (using only one pene).

Now.... depending on if this guy had his "dominant" pene removed will probably determine his ability to breed. He may be able to switch over, but I have observed all our males lock with their dominant pene 100% of the time.

Pop your male after removing him from a females tub after a visual lock. The pene he locked with will be larger, purple and will not have a sperm plug on it. This is a good tip if you did not observe a lock to conclude if your male "may" have locked a female and you did not see it.

Just unpaired a few males this morning that I observed visual locks with last night. I'll see if I can post a video of a males hemi penes to show the difference.
