TSC Pine Shavings...

Does anyone have experience with TSC pine shavings?
I contacted them to ask if they were kiln dried and they replied: "Our pine shavings are kiln dried according to the manufacturer."
They aren't the same color as most kiln dried pine I've seen, but they aren't moist like non-kiln dried pine either. I'm getting mixed info online and it's all from 2+ years ago.


Right now I'm buying shavings at walmart for $7 for 2.0cuft, so it'd be nice to buy them at TSC.

I have been using TSC pine shaving (fine or flakes) for 7 years now without any issues.

Been using TSC flakes for a few years now. Was having bad urine smells so started using their pelletized 40lb horse bedding. Its in a green bag and for like $5 a bag. Turns into dust after a couple days. We put that down and then spread a layer of flake on top. Works great! Have about 350 rats in our shed at the moment.

I use TSC pine. I was using the flake until yesterday when I bought a bad of the fine, and it's so much nicer. The fine stuff is mush softer, and has far far less dust than the flake.

I use the TSC flake, the fine has on occasion be sawdust, so I just stick with flake.

It doesn't have that strong smell of non-kiln dried, so I'm inclined to believe it is kiln dried.

I've been chastised and informed that TSC is not kiln dried because it doesn't say it on the bag and it will kill outright any rats I tried to keep on it. The hundreds of rats I've kept on it tend to say that person is full of poop. I'll believe the rats.

I use their pelletized pine horse bedding underneath a layer of shredded aspen. I might have to try the pine flakes though, if they work ok and are cheaper.

What does the price run on their pine flakes / fine bedding?

Between $5 and $6 per block.

Make sure you look through the plastic at the shavings. I've sometimes found dampness/moldy looking bales. If so, tell the people. Once a rat had burrowed through a whole pallet, leaving holes and rat poops all through the bales. Some times of year, the bales can be more sawdust than shavings.

But 90% of time, it's great stuff.

Thanks for the info guys! Right now the shredded aspen I get (harlan) is about $12 for 4 cu. ft. so I'll have to do a comparison and check out the TSC stuff in person. I am all about saving money if this stuff is similar in quality and won't hurt the rats.
