BP chilling outside of hide

So I know a snake that doesn't hide is a stressed out snake, but the past few days my BP has been hanging out outside of his favorite log hideout. He's not curled up tightly or moving around, he's just kinda layin around with his entire body in an S shape. He has part of his belly dipped in the water dish and has been like that for about an hour. He's also started sticking his head and neck out when I get home from school/work. Is it safe to assume he's comfortable in his environment? I've had him a few months and it seems to me like he enjoys getting out of the cage every day. Sorry for newb questions!!

sort of the issue I have been dealing with.

my friends 4 year old female doesnt hang out in her hide ever. and she isnt always in a ball

A pic might help.

If we're talking about a half log hide they are not very good as they do not offer a good feeling a security. Your snake may feel just as safe where it is as it does in the hide.

In a hide you want something that is fully enclosed with only one door. These hides from Reptile Basics are a great choice. They are sturdy and easy to clean.

If your not using a half log I would think it may be a temperature issue.

Check for poop or urates under the hide.
