Room heating

So it's starting to get a little chilly where I live at night, and as winter comes closer, I'm wondering if you guys might have any tips as to room heating. I don't have central heating (just the kind of heaters you dial up or down without specific temperatures indicated). I was thinking about getting a space heater with a thermostat but was concerned about running it during the day when I might not be home. Anyone here have any advice?

I use one of those oil filled heaters, Which works fine for me. I have the heater plugged into a thermostat,that is set at what ever temp I like. Don't depend on the thermostat that is built into the heater. I also use a box fan for air circulation.

at the moment I am using an electric heater that blows hot air, only because the room in which I keep my herps is fairly small and I have all but two of the heater vents connected to and blowing into the herp room. I have used oil filled heaters in the past and they seem to work great not to mention a lot safer! I say go with the oil filled type.

In an approximately 12' x 13' room, I'm using this heater. I have it hooked up to a ranco thermostat like this one, but I bought one pre-wired used from another keeper online.

So far this setup works really well. It keeps the room easily at 78f.

This only issue I have is that the heater has to be placed so that it doesn't touch anything, yet is somewhat close to the corner of the room with all the snakes.. So placement is tricky. Other than that, it works great.

My snake room is so tiny, 6'×6', and packed so full of racks that I don't usually need extra heat, but I do use one of the oil filled heaters in my daughter's room, along with one in my computer room where my lizards are if needed. I would definitely go with an external t-stat like a ranco or something though.
