Importance of quarantine.....

.... I know that this subject was beaten to death here... but just recent even in My collection let me write again here:
QUARANTINE YOU NEW ANIMALS !!!!!!

I Acquired pair of Albino house snakes on last White plains show... they eat fine shed for me recently.... I transported them together from show... dint noticed anything till yesterday.... Yesterday I've noticed mite infestation in male enclosure...

I have no Idea how but i got bugs...

I've changed substrate on both to paper... go for chemical warfare as well...

Check them today and look like female is clean (thanks Gods) male enclosure was full of dead buggers...

He looks way better today without creepy crawlers on him.... Repeated procedure and hoping for the best....

is a second time i Bring mites from show... both times right Quarantine Procedure (at least all i can do in room 12x10 feet i rent in NYC) hopefully saved my collection....

Like someone in this forum said before... I don't care if animals came from GOD himself.. I Still will quarantine them....

Ugh. Hopefully you caught them before they spread.

I thought part of the QT process was putting any new arrivals into an enclosure and on substrate that had been pre-treated with PAM (or other permethrin product), just in case...

well Pam is Prohibited in NYC... for some reason... I Use Natural Chemistry Reptile Spray... worked well for me so far...
I don't know.. why I didn't treat enclosures on beginning... I think excitement form acquiring that pair clouded my mind...

Natural Chemistry is good stuff! I use that to clean all my cages and it works great. Never have to worry about accidentally poisoning my snakes.

Glad you caught it early! I just came back from a reptile show myself last weekend. Even though I didn't buy anything, I was still paranoid about bringing mites or something else into my collection. You never know now days...

I had the same thing happen to me the first time I bought from a show. I had put the snake into a pam pre-treated enclosure, but she spilled water from her bowl the next day and I took out the pre-treated substrate... a couple weeks later she had a crazy case of mites.

Now I pre treat every new arrival and have spare "treated" paper towels (already sprayed with pam and dried) in case of any spills, etc. I also wipe new arrivals down with the natural chemistry spray when they arrive.

That stinks that pam is not allowed in NYC. I wonder why.

Good point, I keep using treated paper for 30 days as well, for exactly the reason you stated.

Yeah, it stinks NY would do that...

BUT...

PAM is a 0.5% permethrin solution delivered by aerosol. There are alternatives, including mixing the 2 oz bottle of NIX or RID cream rinse (which is 1% permethrin) with 1 gallon of water, and using it as a spray. Permethrin 10 (10% permethrin), available at livestock supply stores like Southern States or Tractor Supply, can be similarly diluted at 3 ml per 2 liters of water and applied as a spray.
