Is this plan to start breeding financially sane?
Ok I have a normal female about 1900 grams almost 4 years old.ready to breed and I was thinking of buying a bumblebee Mojave male sub adult 500 gram and I got a 12.5 percent chance of pastel, spider, Mojave, bumblebee, pastave, bumblebee mojave, and spider mojave. Smart move or dumb?? Thanks for opinions! !

Is you plan to sell every last off spring and just keep 1 mating pair (female normal and the new male)?

Keep my mating pair and if I get a double morph male keep him too sell the rest. I'd like to keep branching out into more morphs as I progress financially

Why would you keep a male that wouldn't be as powerful as your breeder male?
If you wanted to you could keep a two or three gene girl though.

Is the plan financially sane?? Do you like to gamble??
Nothing we do is sane, we just hope we don't get a clutch of all normal. ;)

Sticking with your plans you would either:
1-want to hold on to and grow out all the females. One male can service several girls
2-trade for genes you don't already have in your mix, even taking a loss on a trade can be a good thing IF she is a girl you like.

You have to look at the picture a couple years down the road, not just tomorrow.

Like pit said, You wouldnt be dumping 1000's of $ into something.

IF i was to go that route id honestly keep all females, and sell the rest

with the money made, purchase another line of gene female, or even get into a recessive gene! Those are were the $$ comes if you hit good combos.

^^^ Very interesting thread to read. Maybe I need to get on fauna more. I liked your comment about getting a non herp person to buy a snake. I am out there trying to remove the snake stigma every day. I'll get people that tell me how much they hate snakes and after I show them some of my deliberately cute pictures of mine they almost start to come around. I think that the future of the ball python industry is slightly dependant on how many people will actually consider giving an older adult ball python a home as a pet and not a breeder. From what I can tell in the VERY limited time I have been around, ball pythons sell at the prices they do because of breeders alone. Every local add for a BP mentions something about breeding or has the weight included(for breeders). I rarely see an add that says good family snake for sale with tank and accessories included, it's always a picture of the snake on a scale. I could care less if any snake that I produce sells I will keep them as pets and be the creepy snake guy. I also wouldn't be surprised IN THE LEAST to learn that the top producers of BP's are sitting on about 5+ new morphs (or genes) that will become the next 10-50k animals and their slowly planning on releasing them but that's just the conspiracy theorist in me coming out.

Is entering the ball python industry now financially sane? Well I guess there's nowhere to go but up from here :D
