    IRIS under bed storage
My adult BP is about 18 years old or so, and he is over 4'. He's been living in an aquarium that is 48" long x 13" deep x 21" tall with a pegboard lid. (576 sq inch footprint) It weighs a ton, and it's so tall that it's difficult for me to reach into it to clean it. (I'm a short armed, short woman.)

I would like to put him into an IRIS underbed storage container that has a hinged lid. http://smile.amazon.com/IRIS-Underbe...age+containers It's 39" long x 20" deep x 6.5" tall. (About 700+ square inch footprint.) Questions:

    1. Is 6" tall enough? If not, I can eliminate the top and use another of the containers as a top, making it 12" tall.

    2. I'll need to lock the lid or top container onto the bottom. In the past I had done this simply by drilling holes through both layers and sliding a bobby pin on. Worked great. Easy on, easy off. Any better suggestions?

    3. Any problems with off-gassing? Should these be aired outside in the sun for a couple of days, or will a thorough wash be enough?

    4. Vent holes in the front and rear ok, or should I put some around the sides, too?

    I appreciate your suggestions.

Honestly I think 6" would be pushing the friendship, particularly if your snake is as big as you suggest. Whilst they don't require a ton of verticle space. Problems arise and things come up where they need it. At least some. I'd recommend using another container as a top. So long as its secured well enough.

Thorough wash should be fine, so long as it's just that. Thorough.

Vent holes in the front and rear should be fine. So long as it isn't blocked off, or the ventilation isnt restricted.

    All the best.

Keep in mind that BP are ground dwellers not arboreal or semi-arboreal snakes therefore they do fine in low profile enclosures so 6 inches is fine, I have 3000/4000 females in tubs that low.

Air holes will depends on how many you will need don't put too many to start with, put a few, setup the tub like (proper temps water dish inside etc) and get a humidity reading.

Based on that reading you may need to had more holes.

As far as airing the tubs I usually melt the holes outside and leave the tubs out for about 30 min.

Im with Deborah. There is no reason for anything over 6". My rescue red tail is in a 41qt which is 5.75 inches tall. He is 5+ feet and way thicker than any ball I have ever seen. For reference 74qt sterilite are 6 inches tall. Every boa guy swears by them for racks.

    Good luck

Found a 44" x 20"x 6" by Bella at Big Lots for $15. Will work on it. Much bigger footprint for him, and it has an opaque top, so I think he'll feel safer.
