BP likes the cool side more?
Hey guys! I've had my BP Abdul for almost two months (It'll be 2 mos. on the 21st) and boy, time really does fly by. I assume I'm doing everything right. He's been feeding great every wednesday taking down his mice. Today I'll be feeding him his first rat, so hopefully everything goes by smoothly.

So a week ago today, I moved Abdul into a bigger enclosure and he seems to be taking to it nice. He explored for about 3 minutes and went back into his cool hide with no issues. I'm a bit worried though. Everything is good temp wise. His ambient temp is consistent going from 80-85 degrees. His hot side manages 89-93º and I check it daily just to be on the safe side, but he isn't utilizing the warm hide. I have a thermostat managing the UTH and a thermometer checking the temps of the UTH and ambient temp. Maybe he prefers the cool side? Anyways, I took him out the other day and he looks fine. Cool to the touch and exploring my arm like it were a tree branch. It's been about a week and he has not been in his warm hide. Could it be his preference? Below is a picture of his enclosure before I cluttered the background with more stuff to make it look more "full." It was also before I got everything situated for him to stay in. :)

The cool hide is located right next to the water dish. The warm hide is the one across from the dish. Whenever I walk into the room, I see him with half of his head out looking towards to see what's going on, which is normal, but I'm trying to figure out why he isn't utilizing his warm hide? Is it because it's not facing the doorway like his cool hide or he just simply enjoys the coolness?

    Thanks!

Update: Just saw him with half of his body out of the cool hide going back in because he saw me. It's 1am and dark. Maybe he uses his warm side at night without me even knowing?

The ambients sound cozy so I wouldn't fret over him sticking to the cooler side of the enclosure, especially during the summer months like this, it's all part of their thermoregulation process and if he feels like using the hot spot then he'll go use it. I find that my BPs like to stay on the cooler side of the tub during their shed cycles.

I have a bp that is Always in his cool side hide that's about 80-82 but he's always in there. He will only stay in his warm hide for little while after eating but after an hour or two he's right back to the cool side. The hides are exactly the same too I tried switching them once to see if he would still do it since one hide is a lighter tan color and the other is brown (exo terra stopped making the tan ones they are all brown now) but nope it didn't matter just likes the cool side. The hot side is around 89-92 lol. We just have really cool chill snakes [emoji41]

Snakes a weird dont try to understand them!!! I honestly belive they like cooler sides and will only sit on hot side to digest During winter the sit in middle of bin (ambient are low like 75ish +/-)

But during summer when it is naturally warmer, 80-82.. They are ALWAYS on the coolside.\

Also im not sure, but looking at that picture that MAY be a little to wet or damp on the substrate! Let it dry out a little (Maybe its just the pic) You dont want to be able to squeeze water out of the coco husk,

Oh, I took the photo on my iPhone and neglected to turn off the filters! All is well with the bedding. The coco husk is moist but not drenched in water. :)

And thanks for the responses everyone! I didn't realize that it being summertime, that would have an effect on how snakes choose! Also, he took down his first rat today and it was a success. He then went into his warm hide so he can digest!

    :)
