Where should I place probe from Hydrofarm thermostat?
    Hi all,

I'm setting up a new tank (first time) and have a question. I bought a Hydrofarm for my UTH and was wondering where I should place the probe. I'm using a liner under the cedar and the cedar is about an 3/4" thick.

I'm guessing the best place would be under the liner. But with the liner and cedar on top, how do you get an accurate reading on top of the cedar, with the BP would be? I'm more concerned with the temp in the hide, above the UTH. I'm going to use an Acurite wireless for the low and high side, but those are taking readings from the wall.

    Thanks!

You want to sandwich the probe between the UTH and the bottom of the tank, not actually in the tank. Inside the tank you want to put a thermometer probe under the substrate, underneath the warm side hide to monitor the actual interior temp and adjust the thermostat accordingly. So the wireless Acurites aren't really the way to go. I would also only use about 1/2" of substrate, otherwise its much harder to heat properly.

    Okay, thanks for the input.

I'll switch over to the Acurite at Walmart with the probe. Should I put that one above the lining or below? Worried about the BP getting tangled up in it, so would guess under the lining, but want to be sure.
