1,000 gram male: one small rat or two?

I was wondering, for my adult male should I be giving him one rat a week or two. After eating one he begs for a second one for days but all I've seen around says only one a week? He is hungry again after 7 days even when he eats two so I'm not sure what to do.

Eh, use your judgement. I have one BP that IS a garbage disposal. Sometimes he gets the finicky eater's leftovers, sometimes he doesn't. I don't sweat it, either way. He's about 950 grams, he'll be okay with his rat or his rat and extras.

That said, I don't keep a rigid feeding schedule. I did when they were new, but at this point if it's been at least 5 days and they're cruising for food, I give it to them. It's cut WAAAAY back on my refusals.

Normally I'd say one is fine, but my Enchi at his size was a garbage disposal so she moved up to mediums instead of two smalls. My other 1k girls get offered a small a week and are fine.

With your male, I'd say one small per week is probably good.

As long as your small rats are about 100g you're fine. The problem with rat sizing (although it should be fairly uniform) I found there is usually variance in what people consider smalls, mediums, etc. I would consider giving him a medium once a week. 2 smalls is fine as long as they're small smalls.

If your snake was a female I would say give her two without question but large males can be lazy breeders.

I honestly don't know for sure he's not a she. Just going off what I was buy the guy I bought him from. He bred balls but wasn't a breeder if you know what I mean so I'm assuming he was correct but who knows. I will weigh my rats and see but since he's hungry I'll feed him two. Also not concerned about lazy breeding males cause he's a pet quality. I have no breeding plans.

Before I started thawing the two rats for today I weighed them. One was 58 grams the other 61 grams. I will buy a medium next time to see the size of those. I'm assuming I'm aiming for around 100 grams?

I don't feed anything larger then 60 grams rats to my males they are breeders however even if they were pet the would not get more then that.

People tend to forget that we feed every week and this is a lot of food compare to what they probably get in the wild.

Feeding smaller prey year round will allow you to have a BP that eats with consistency avoiding long fast periods.

I knew I should've put money on you posting in this thread. :gj:

He ate the first rat but didn't want the second one right away. I had to leave so I just tossed it. He's been begging non stop since I got home but I'm out of smalls atm. I go get Thor's next live hopper tomorrow so I'll get him another small for tomorrow then a medium for next weekend and see how he takes it.
