mutation causes color change in half of the face (different species, pic heavy)
    Hi there :)

i know this thread is slightly offtopic, because there was a thread about a clutch where BPs hatched where one half of the face had one color, and the other half is a different color.

unfortunately, i did not manage to find it again. but i came across some compelling evidence that this might be genetic, and its just too awesome not to share.

the link: http://diply.com/trendyjoe/15-fascin...tation/41340/1 its one of those facebook-links with lots of commercials and you have to click through 5 pages to see all the images. so i will try to hotlink some of them.

ok, now, help me here.... where was that thread again with the half-faced BPs? unfortunately i failed to find out if its hereditary, or if these are in fact chimeras that have two different cell lines in their body. but then, the cats, there is two of them, and in the thread that showed BPs with these split faces, if i remember correctly it was more than one.

anyway, i think its fascinating how this can happen in so many species that are so very different. and for BPs, it would be awesome to have it as a reproducable morph.

Well, it is cool for sure. The thread I think you are talking about was about some black pastel pieds:

There is a split faced corn, too. He is assumed to be a chimera. If you go through the thread, you'll find lots of updates as his colors came in as he grew:

I think the half-leucistic peacock is genetic. I'm pretty sure I remember that you can breed for them. Basically it is a kind of pied. But it doesn't usually show as much of a left/right split as this bird (and if you look closely, it is only the tail that is split that way).

I think you may be talking about Mike Wilbanks atomic gene. I recently saw one for sale for $50k I think. It is a recessive gene if I remember correctly.

    kc261 found the right one:

thats the one, thanks :) its two half-faced BPs from one clutch, this is the one i vaguely remembered but failed to locate.

i know about the atomic gene, i love it, but thats not what i had in mind :) but i checked all pictures of atomics that i could find, and the atomic fire as well as the atomic fire sugar have the half-faced look, in the atomic fire sugar its quite dramatic:

so, yeah. we have to see more of these atomic combos, only a handful of these exist so far.

As far as i know, all of the animals you linked Pythonfriend are just simply chimairas, it isnt genetic. Now, Mike's atomic gene certainly is genetic and it would be awsome if we could figure out if it is just a pattern/color mutation or if it is actually forcing the animal to be chimaira during development.

true, some of them are proven chimeras, proven with genetic tests.

but then, Brandon Osborne has 3 of them, and all of them from the same black pastel pied project. and Mike Wilbanks has two of them, both from the atomic project.
and then there are the two cats, the last picture i posted.

true chimeras are incredibly rare and incredibly random. so when you get 2 or 3 or more of them, and they are related, its not unreasonable to assume that there is more to it.
