DIY Hide
I like to be organized so I made a bunch of plans for myself and figured I would share them and my rational!
Suggestions welcome before I actually start building a couple of things- it's my first DIY anything ever, so I tried to make it fairly simple... I also made it in mind with the specific personality of my snake, so it's kind of tailor made :)

Wow. Impressive. Like a snake condo. I'd be shocked if the upper level is ever used. Seems like a lot of work for something that's gonna get pooped and peed on though...

Interesting concept, but I think you've just "Rube Goldberg"ed it. I'm still curious about the results though!

actually, my bp just moved from a low tub where he could squeeze between the top of his hide and the lid, and now that he's in a bigger cage with a taller ceiling he doesn't know what do do with himself- he hangs out on top of the hide and stretches his neck up to the lid, wondering what happened to his good squishing space- actually thats what made me think of this in the first place! he is a quirky one :P
i don't mind doing a little extra work, i like keep-busy type projects!
this is just something fun for me to do in my spare time :)

Re: DIY Hide
How large is the hide he's getting on top of compared to his size? Got a picture? We love pictures.:D

sure! found him lazing on top of one of them like he has been since I moved him- he never had a problem using his hides until I moved him temporarily and he discovered the magic of squishing himself! (excuse the boring cage, moved him recently and havent had time to make it fancy yet- hopefully we will start with these new hides ;))

My gawd.
You have put a LOT of work in!
My only suggestion would be to move the holes to one side of the hide (not on the side itself, but to the right or left side of the front rather than in the middle). When openings are in the middle, more light gets in. I find that snakes don't like that so much...
Beautiful stuff though! Very interesting. I made something similar for my corn snake using two Kleenex boxes. But I twist-tied them together at the sides, and had an interconnecting hole in the middle of the two. She LOVED IT. So much so, in fact, that she plugged up the top part of the hide with aspen and I couldn't get her out. I didn't see her for like a month. LOL (she ate of course).
All the best!
