Heat tape for custom built habitats
I am currently pricing out costs to get all of my snakes out of the glass tanks and into custom built habitats. I am trying to determine the amount of heat tape needed for each tank. Each tank will house one snake. The dimensions will be 36" x 18" x 12". (Length, Width. Height). The tape I have found comes in multiple widths such as 4", 6" and even 12". I will also have some sort of led interior lighting that will be inside on the top of the habitats. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Re: Heat tape for custom built habitats
As long as your maintaining a steady ambient, then there is probably no need for anything larger than the 6" positioned about 4" to 6" away from one end, and running across the width. That will still leave 24" of unheated space on the other side for it to cruise around or use a cool hide. Good luck and please post some pics when you have finished.

Go to reptilebasics.com They have THG heat tape for like $3 bucks a square foot. They even have the wiring kits for the heat tape as well.

I forgot to add this...
Don't forget that the heat tape will only provide belly heat and won't do anything for ambient heat. I'd look into RHPs (radient heat panel) in order to keep the terrarium's ambient temps up.
