    Securing a terrarium lid.
Hi again, everyone. A friend managed to snag a 10 gallon tank during my town's yard sale for me. Only problem is it doesn't have a lid. I picked up a Petco brand lid on my way home today. It's built to fit over the top of the tank, so I'm having trouble figuring out how to secure it. Due to its design, clips won't really work and I'm having trouble thinking of anything other than stacking heavy things on it. I am considering getting a hatchling jungle carpet python and I want to have a tank ready in case an opportunity pops up at my first expo in a few weeks. The last thing I want is for a snake to escape into my apartment, especially one that small. If there isn't a good way to go about if I'm just going to take the hit and buy a better tank.

I had a lid very similar; I had bought clips not knowing they couldn't be secured under the metal lip. Stupid design, but I digress.

I simply used 10lb weights for each corner. Probably not ideal, or pretty, but it's what I had available at the time. I have heard of people using heavy-duty tape on the outside but I personally wouldn't... just in case. Tape is NOT safe for snakes (or probably reptiles in general).
If you do end up using weights, you'd probably need to increase the weight as the snake got bigger and stronger. I've also heard of people just putting books near the corners and edges; essentially anything heavy enough to hold it down and not move or slide around when the snake tries to get out.
    I say WHEN for a reason ;)

    All the best!

I've seen some people use nylon straps made for luggage pretty successfully. Like these:

    Good luck to you!

The straps are actually a really good suggestion. I don't know why I didn't think of that
