Question about hets

I am no breeder, but I have thought about maybe one day getting into it but not anytime soon,and I have a male pastel orange ghost that without a female orange ghost or het orange ghost would only produce pastels.My question is,because I have learned many people are full of it sadly,can you tell if a het is a het or are you just going to have to believe the person that sells you the animal?Its not something I'm concered about right now,I wouldn't breed my snakes unless I knew for a fact the offspring would be safe,plus I would want to keep all of them,which isn't very smart because I know how much care they need and I have enough to keep me busy lol.i give credit to good breeders alot of time and effort goes into what they do!

Some hets have markers but these markers can be misleading not every het has them or sometimes normals have these markers even though they don't carry the gene at all so a good rule to live by its hets are just normal untill proven otherwise

you need to be able to trust the breeder.

only a few hets sometimes have markers, these would be pied or clown.

with hypo / ghost / orange ghost (all the same) there are no markers.

I don't believe this idea always works. In most cases combo hets will cost more than their non het counterparts. So in deciding rather or not to buy a het, we're right back to needing to be able to trust the breeder.

yes, well, of course they cost more and sell for more. what he wanted to say is: you can only really be sure when you managed to prove them out yourself.

apart from that its all about trust. you pay more for them than you pay for BPs that are not het, but you only know for sure that the money was not wasted when they prove out for you and you hatch these visual recessive babies.

Just for the sake of conversation, that does you no good before you spend the money. Sadly, we're back to trust. As well, say you buy a pastel het. pied produced from a pastel x visual pied pairing. those babies are by all accounts 100% het. pied. You pair that pastel het. pied to even a "proven" het. pied, your odds suck, you hit no visuals. Is that pastel het. pied any less het ?

I've purchased plenty of hets over the years and every single one has proven out. However, I only purchase from people I know and/or trust...

I also have some disagreement with a blanket statement like this. It does come down to trusting the breeder, and that is where transparency of breeding records comes in to play.

I know on my end, for recessive projects, I use a Visual (usually the male) to a VIRGIN female to make hets. This ensures that every kiddo is 100% het. If using a Visual female to any male, then that sorts out to the same odds. I post and give the pictures of the locks and any other pertinent information.

Now, could someone make an elaborate ruse to get that extra few bucks for the het Hypo, Albino, or whatever? Yes, but it it really is not likely. I will submit you will find VERY few cases of a reasonably reputable person, who is tranparent with the breeding data, that sells false hets.

This idea that there are a ton of grifters out there selling fake hets is WAY overblown. Does it happen, sure. Is it the norm or even common, absolutely not.

I don't have any hets but If and when I do, I will ask for pictures of the parents and clutch mates.

The most important is to buy from a reputable breeder that will back the genetics of the animals they sell.

While at some point fake hets were a bigger problem (especially back when some mutations were very expensive), those days scams are of another kind.

People are not gonna jeopardize their reputation for a $100 animal (price of a het hypo female).

I have bought hets when I first started (not talking of $100 price tag either) and never in my mind did I question or wonder if they would prove, the key I bought them from trusted breeders.
