Thermometer/hygrometer recommendations

Hi all,
I am a new user to this forum but I have been referring to it for a while so I decided to become a member. I recently bought a young BP from my local PetSmart. I am not sure what age it is or which sex. I like to think that it is a male because I named it Yoda :snake:. I am currently using a pair of analog thermometers on the hot and cold side of Yoda's tank (40Gal. open mesh top glass cage). I have read in this forum that these can be quite inaccurate and I am looking into upgrading to digital. I have done some online shopping and I have found some that have caught my attention but I am not sure which to purchase. My question to you all is, what would you recommend and which, if you do so, use currently? Thank you!!!!:):):)

THat's a tough question as it really depends on how much money you want to spend. For instance I started out with my first BPs using a Hydrofarm that I ordered from Amazon. It was like 26$. I actually wound up using a lot of them (I had five at one point) and for a cheap thermostat, they work pretty well. Keep in mind, they aren't proportional so if you set your t-stat for 88 degrees, you can expect for it to hit highs of like 93 and lows of like 84. So you need to plan accordingly and check the temps fairly frequently for the first few days until you see what kind of swings you have. For a beginner, that's what I'd recommend. That being said, we only have one Hydrofarm now, that we use for emergencies. I now use a mix of Herpstats and Vivarium Electronics. They are incredible and can even be programmed for nighttime drops. However, you pay for it. Good thermostats run about $150+. I payed $415 for my Herpstat4, but it runs four racks at once.

It's about $12 in store for the one with a hygrometer built in.

Well forget thermometer! you got yourself a thermostat! on right path next go to a local harware store and buy a I.R temp gun rougly 20-80$ depending on brand. what you want to look for is

-Min/Max(reading)
- 1.5+/- (don't want anything more then that for accuracy)
-and .5 +/- accuracy reading (meaning if u shoot 500 times, itll all be withing .5 degree)

Secondly for your hygrometer, an analog one will be fine, you dont need PERFECT 70 degree humidty like you need a steady temp, So just use it as a "guideline" when hes in shed make then needle go high, when hes not it can be mid to lower. it all depends on snakes, some of my 1 piece shed in 50-60 others 80+


That's just my 2 cents, thermometers are good if left in enclosure because they time for there readings, my Temp gun has served me well for the 30$ it costs! best investment other then herpstat! or well snakes themselves

Powerline, op was referring to thermometers, not t-stats. I just use the $12 walmart ones, they seem to work well enough for me. Humidity, and two separate temp readings. I also have a couple exoterra units, and they seem to work alright.
