Guide to buying morphs online?
Hi I'm looking to buy some morphs online and there's a couple I have my eyes on but I wanted to get some feelers out in the BP community about the vocab (100% het?) on some do's and dont's on buying morphs online and a couple of good websites. I appreciate all the help!
Re: Guide to buying morphs online?
100% het refers to genetics. Ball pythons have three basic types of morphs; dominant, co-dominant, and recessive. Recessive morphs need two copies of a gene to be expressed. So 100% het (short for heterozygous) means that one copy of the gene is in the snake, so the morph is hidden. If you just want morphs for the aesthetics, there's no sense in paying extra for hidden genes. If you're interested in breeding, it takes longer with hets but by breeding offspring back up to adults (or two hets together) you have a chance at the visual morph.
Regardless of your pursuits, shop quality, not bargains. Take your time, be able to tell the morph from a normal (if you're interested in Mojaves, black pastels, fires, etc.) and wait for the best example of the morph in line with your preferences.

Yes to everything above. Also, make sure to check the Board of Inquiry if you use Fauna and the like. Just so you don't get scammed by some low life. Also, keep in mind, that when someone says that they have paperwork to verify a het, SO WHAT! It's a piece of paper. Make sure you're buying from people that you feel you can trust.
