Best Morphs to Start Out With?
Hi! I'm slowly getting back into the ball python world after an unfortunate circumstance with my first snake, and was wondering what morph pairs would be the best for a starting breeder. Depending on the availability of certain ball pythons at the next show I attend, I may start breeding this season or next season. I'm planning on getting three ball pythons at that show, two females (single gene?) and a male (double gene?). My question is, what morphs would be a good idea to buy? (Let's say money doesn't really right now :)) I'm not looking to breed for a business quite yet, only for hobby, and am not really looking to produce any specific morph.

Also, I will be building an 18 tub rack before acquiring the snakes, so I will most definitely have enough space for them and any potential hatchlings. ;)

I'm new to snakes and breeding myself, but would say maybe start with a male pastel or lesser and female spider and a female pinstripe.

Personally I would get recessives... I just like them better... so like a pied male and a few females that are things like pastel or mojave het pied

    so many possible choices :)

but if your budget is higher than lets say 200 dollars per BP, i would not start with a male pastel or lesser ^^

recessives are nice, but if you want to start small, its not the best choice. when you have some double and triple gene combos, you can make hets that have plenty of extra genes, and use these to move your project forward.

i would begin with codominant or dominant morphs, like lesser/butter, fire, enchi, yellowbelly, mojave, cinnamon, black pastel, pastel, spider, calico, pinstripe. maybe a nice double-gene male, and two single-gene females. if you can upgrade within your budget, go for it. so a triple gene male and two single-gene females would be nicer, or maybe triple gene male and double gene females. but whatever you buy, you should be able to see all the genes at work that are in there, it should be a nice example of the morph or combo.

if you start with hatchlings and raise them up (which makes sense, adult females are much more expensive), then only buy females now, look for a male 1 year later.

    oh, and read this:

Thanks for all of the helpful suggestions, so far! :) And @Pythonfriend, I have read through that article before when I was deciding if I wanted to breed or not, and it has many great pointers and tips!

Also, I have an update! I was chatting with a breeder earlier today and may end up purchasing a male lemonblast later this year
:D Now all I have to do is figure out what morph females to buy. (I'm leaning towards a lesser/butter and/or mojave... what do you guys think?)

Mojaves are cool because you can make your blue eyed leucistic

I'd definitely get two gene females. Maybe a Pastave?

I may be bias, but I would agree with the Mojave.

if its a lemonblast, it has to be a really high quality one, with good quality pastel in it :)

otherwise, i would look maybe for a lesser pinstripe or fire pinstripe male. or some two-gene male with enchi. pastels tend to brown out and its by far the most common morph in existence. or maybe a super pastel pinstripe male?

about the females, i would say it depends on what you like.
