Reptile shows and mites.

On a current thread there is mention of bringing home mites from a reptile show. My son and I will be attending the upcoming show in Renton, Wa. What precautions should we take to make sure this does not happen?

When we get home from a show, we don't go near the reptiles, we wash our clothes and shower.

- Hand sanitizer before and after handling any animal at the show.
- Spray mite killer on your shoes before entering your house.
- Throw all clothing into the wash and shower as soon as possible. (Don't go into your reptile room or handle your animals until you do this)


And if you were really paranoid, feel free to pre-treat your enclosures with PAM as a preventative measure before your show.

I pre-treat my QT enclosures and wipe the animal down with Reptile Spray when I get home, while still in the car, unless it's something like a really squirmy young colubrid with a high risk of losing it.

I also take a can of OFF with me to the show and leave it in the car. If I'm not bringing an animal home with me I spray myself before I get into the car as I'm leaving. You don't want to use it if you have a new animal though, most don't react well to DEET.

Shower and change immediately when I get home.

I honestly don't know how vendors of CB high-end animals manage after reading that some will throw WC animals with minimal treatment for parasites onto their tables, I'd go nuts worrying about bringing unwanted creepy-crawlies home.

This has been one of my biggest worries about doing shows. I take as many precautions as I can. I use PAM on the bags that they come to and from the show in, then I spray the carpet that they sit on at the show and then their enclosures when they get home. Thus far no animals sent home or brought home with mites.

Considering we are going to look, not buy, it sounds like we can easily take precautions. I appreciate all the advise.

yeah, I remember that one time i went to just look too :rofl: Pretty sure I bought 3 snakes:oops:

On another note I brought home an enclosure from a pet shop that may house future leopard geckos should I worry about any mites or am I in good regards?
