A rat bit my snake and it's bleeding profusely! HELP!
I fed my 600 gram lemon blast a small live rat just now. My snake grabbed the rat and didn't get a good hold and ended up letting go. I didn't think anything was wrong until 5 seconds later my snake was pouring out blood from behind it's mouth. I immediately took the rat out. What should I do about my snake??

He stopped bleeding. I'm going to take out the substrate and replace it with paper towels.

Picture is blurry so I can offer no advice as to the severity of the wound. If you don't know how to handle it, take the snake to someone who does - vet time.

If the bleeding stops, I would put an antiseptic ointment such as neosporin on it, make certain the cage is clean, and leave the snake alone for a while. Not an expert tho, sure someone here can answer better than myself. But I am certain that assuming the bleeding stops, the focus will be on preventing infection

Keep him on paper towels until he heals. Don't put neosporin on his scales, the oil causes sloughing and can make a sound worse. Did the rat actually bite the inside of his mouth or is it just the scales behind his jaw?

It was the scales behind the jaw.

Give him a warm water bath to clean out the wound if you haven't already and monitor. If you see swelling or he seems to be in pain, I would take him to the vet. If you do, I would make sure they do injection antibiotics as opposed to oral. Not only is oral medication ineffective for snakes due to their slow metabolism, but you don't want to be irritating the injury any more than you have to. I would also not offer food until he's healed up. He can deal with not eating for a week or two, you definitely don't want the cut to get re-opened by the strain of eating.

dont use neosporin....use diluted betadine washes....neosporin will affect the scales...and soften them.
