Some new additions

First are a trio of little yellow ackies I traded for ,These guys are extremly entertaining and fun to watch

and second I had a couple of nicey colored crested babies hatch out last night , for size reference these little guys can curl up on a dime

Very cool! I wondered how big crestie hatchlings were, but had never seen a reference as clear as that. I'd like to hear more about the ackies, too. It doesn't seem we have many ackie keepers here.

Mlededee, it may be a possibility but I dont let any of them go until they are well established usually around 3 months old
Marla I have had some larger baby cresteds than these but not by much I almost hate transfering them to their houseing from a deli cup because they are so small and fragile in appearence
The ackies, I would say are the second best first time lizard pet and the best first time monitor to start with, best fed on a diet primarily of crickets,roaches and other feeder insects with once weekly or so helping of ground turkey 120-130 degree basking with 80-85 ambient temps They are extremely friendly and sociable really close to bearded dragons except they require either a humidty holding substrate or the very least a humid hide and weekly soaking

i'm glad that you keep the cresties until they are established. that gives me time to convince my fiance and to do some good research first anyhow. :mrgreen:

Robert, I can certainly understand being nervous about handling something that small. I would be too. What are you housing the babies in, critter keepers? My adults (1.1) haven't bred yet, and I think it's because they've been together this entire time, so I'm going to be making a new enclosure to house all three females together and then house the male separately.

It's great to hear that the ackies are similar to beardies in temperament. I was under the impression that there weren't any monitor species that consistently 'friendly', but apparently I was mistaken. How big do they get?

Marla , I do keep them in critter keepers with a layer of paper towels between the lid and the bottom to keep the fruit flies and crickets in as well as some extra humidity . paper towel for substrate , and a peice of egg crate or paper towel rolls for hides and climbing
The Ackies get around 2 feet in length which is quite a bit of tail

Thanks Robert, very informative! I hadn't heard the idea of paper towel just below the lid before, but that sounds like a good one.
