My Ball Python is shedding... Any tips for a first time owner?
My first ball python is shedding and I want to know if there are any.. I guess home made ways of making sure he is comfortable. I am looking for ways that would be of no cost to me since I have really no money right now. Right now I have about 3/4 of the top of the cage covered with tin foil and damp wash cloths. I also have a pretty big water dish and the heat lamp right over the water dish. Even with all that the humidity is still going down really fast.. I am currently using Aspen bedding. I have been wanting to switch to cypress mulch and get some moss for the cage but just have not had the money to due to bills rent and paying the ridiculous prices for gas.. Any tips and advice would help. Thank you!

One newbie tip that helps me is I take a damp washcloth and drape it over ou bp's perch under the lamp. It is close enough that it will all evaporate in a day and I can simply resoak it. I find that it helps keep my humidity up around 70% without misting. Our bp is in a glass tank, 100 gallon and the last two sheds (out of three that we have owned her) have been nice one piece perfect sheds. If things go poorly check out the "bad shed no problem" sticky thread. It helped us out with our first bad shed.

Just take a glass of warm water and pour it in. It seems extreme, but it evaporates in a day or so. a light "misting" just isn't usually enough.

I don't really have much of a perch that would be able to support a damp wash cloth... Would it still work if I put the cloth on the floor of the cage directly under the lamp?
I have read that post, it was very helpful!

I suppose. However, my concern would be with the underside getting mildew or promoting some type of growth. Maybe you could simply take a plastic cup and drape it over...

If you don't have a perch, go to Wal Mart in the bath products section and buy a loofa sponge, they are 4"around, hold quite a bit of water and have a rope with a suction cup. They are dirt cheap and reusable. My bp likes to drape across it and hang out too.

You can also get s spray bottle, and fill it with water and spray your bp once or twice a day. As that will help him to shed. It worked for me last night. I checked on my shedding bp and he had a perfect shed.
