Mites!

Somehow I brought mites into the house. I think the rookie mistake of bringing home a new hide and not washing it properly. I have had my ball for 6 weeks and 4 days ago I saw she suddenly has mites. Full grown ones climbing off her.

I tried betadine bath and cleaning everything with a bleach solution; it did not work. Yesterday, I tried a store mite killer and put it on her and everything! She is on paper towels with just her hide and water bowl and she still has mites.

She is in my home office which has a lot of random stuff. I'm not sure how to handle this. Please advise me. It is so upsetting and I'm afraid this will be a major mite war. Thank you.

I would consult your veterinarian. I work for Banfield and we care for Petsmarts reptiles when they are ill. My Petsmart had a huge mite outbreak and all of their herps were affected. I believe the vet gave them an ivermectin cocktail of some kind to give to all the animals. Also they changed the paper towels in enclosures daily and cleaned them daily with a bleach solution.

If you have anything wood in your enclosure you need to soak it in soapy water the bake it in your oven at 200 degrees for 2 hours. Bleach your enclosure from top to bottom....paper towels for substrate a plastic hide and water bowl. Mites take a while to treat because you have to kill off the eggs as well. Reptile relief is good to killcthe mites on your snake and Prevent a Mite for the enclosure. When my blueys had mites it took 5 weeks to clear up. I also vacuumed my office cleaned the walls and sprayed the proven a mite around d the outside of the enclosure.

You do not need a vet for mites unless you want to waste money, get a can of Provent-a-mite, use as directed, renew 2 weeks later and you will be mite free.

It will take care of the mites and eggs for you.

Avoid so called homemade remedy, such as betadine, dish soap etc, they do nothing against eggs.

Yes the provent a mite works. I bought a female spider at a reptile show three weeks ago that had mites. The provent a mite has worked well. Fortunately I kept her separate from my other snakes. Give it a try, just follow the directions closely. And you will be fine.
