"In fact, an alternating pattern is what we see when the kind of experiments every snake dreams of being a part of are conducted…"

This is the best blog in the entire universe.

Why do many female mammals have more than two tits?

Depends on the species, which are you referring to?
Humans have two so they can alternate. Gotta alternate or the other will get sore lol. We generally only have one baby at a time so more than two wouldn't be necessary.
Animals like Cows probably have four so it's easy for the calf to nurse from either side.
Animals like dogs or rats have multiple babies so they need more nipples to feed them all.

Re: Nipples: Yeah, my understanding is that only having two is kind of a rarity among mammals. (Two is useful, I gather. In addition to making sure there's always a fresh supply for the single baby, twins aren't so uncommon. I have a girlfriend who had twins, and it was kind of a two person job feeding them at the same time. But she absolutely did feed them both at the same time, because otherwise she'd never get to sleep or get work done or anything.)

    J.P.
not only snakes, but other reptiles. i once had a leopard gecko that had terrible prolapse so the vet had to cut one hemipene. it continued to be a good breeder after it healed. so the post above about having a back up makes sense.
