    Substrate Question
So, I started using paper towels as my substrate. I absolutely adore them b/c they are so easy to clean up AND they are fixing my humidity issue. Here is my question, for those of you that use paper towels, how many layers of paper towels do you put down? I want to make sure that I am using enough. Especially true over the UTH because I don't want that area too hot on my babies. :)

    Thanks!

You cannot rely on the thickness of paper towel to prevent your snakes from being burned - please purchase a thermostat.

As far as your question, I use 2 layers if/when I use paper towel

Does not matter what substrate you are using or how thick it is, your heat SOURCE must be regulated and you MUST know your temps.

I stared with paper towels, but I recently switched to unprinted newspaper. The paper towels seemed to throw off my heat readings much more than I wanted. I'm still a newbie, but my opinion is find a source for unprinted news paper, and two layers seems to retain heat at exactly the same temperature as the plastic tub underneath it. I have been reading temps of the actual plastic tub underneath my newspaper substrate because you never know if your sakes will burrow underneath your substrate and sit right on the bottom of your tub/tank

    :)

I use towels in mine whenever they get dirty I just switch them out with new ones and wash the other ones so its a renewable source and it holds moisture really well

Back when I used to use paper towel, I would use 1 layer over the hotspot and 2 for the rest of the tub.

My question was really worded badly, sorry about that. I have a thermostat regulating the heat. I just want to make sure that the paper towels are at a proper thickness so that the heat is coming through and that the temps aren't bad for my snakes.

You can probably just mess around with it and find out. The general consensus seems to be 1-2 layers :P
I'm not a paper-towel user for substrate, but I can't imagine one additional layer making too much of a difference heat-wise... maybe like 1*F noticeably. But, I could be wrong.

Before we switched to indented craft paper, we kept our small snakes on one layer of paper towels.

I purchased a coconut substrate recently, it is awesome at keeping up the humidity and fairly easy to clean up. Looks nice to
