Snakes outside

Looking for multiple opinions on the subject of taking your pet BP outside to crawl around.. Obviously keeping a mindful eye and not in the dead of winter..lol..just wonder if it would be stressful,change habits or whatever.. Just a general question to see what comes up

By outside you mean in your backyard? In public places?

In your backyard? Yes but remember not everyone like snakes and all it takes is one nosy neighbor to end up with problems . So keep that in mind if you do.

Public places? Absolutely NOT, people should not be subjected to your snakes, snake keepers are already under attack pretty much everywhere, there is no need to throw oil on the fire.

I take pictures of my animals outdoor in the summer but I live on 4 acres and have total privacy otherwise I would not do it.

I take some of mine to pet stores on very rare occasion in the summer. My male yellow anaconda mainly. They are actually received very well. Even by people that hate snakes. They hear "ANACONDA" and it peaks their curiosity, to see someone holding a "man-eater" and not being hurt lol.

Most people had that "well he's very cool but still not for me, beautiful snake tho!" Answer in the end, but those are the same people that said "OMG let's get outta here there's a snake!" In the beginning.

But now that my collection has grown to where it is, and don't bring em outside unless it's on my property behind the big wall lol. Too much to loose if a neighbor decides to throw a fit because he lives next to the "crazy snake guy!"

As a Floridian, I don't want my neighbors to think I'm the guy responsible for throwing all those Burms in the Everglades...

This is also a college town. Lots of Gainesville Hippie PETA types who take just enough time out from baking their special brownies to remind me that they know what's best for me :rolleyes:

In the summer time I sometimes let them slither around in the backyard it's fenced in so privacy isn't an issue. I think every once in a while it's nice to let your snake feel the sun and feel actual earth under their belly. They probably don't mind that much but idk lol.

The other day I was in a petstore and saw someone with a ball python, out of curiosity I asked if they had just picked it up, they said no... I wasn't exactly thrilled with them because it was probably below ten degrees that day

We dont take a chance. I hardly take them out of their cozy little snake room. We experienced RI in the beginning of our career and dont plan on it anymore. Taking them outside and letting them crawl around could also pick up unwanted bugs,parasites, or illness from whatever they might come in contact with. We invested too much in our collection to take a risk so our snakes are sheltered! Haha.

Well now I see the reason for the popcorn eating emote.
I have to disagree 110%.
Public space is public space and each and every one of us are a part of that public.
That said, there is absolutely no reason to "be a d***" about sharing public space with others and your snakes.
Keep in mind some people have genuine phobias. Respect this and do not make light of this affliction.
A local reptile group here has informal plans to exhibit our pets in public parks when the weather is suitable. A sort of respectful counter to main stream media biased reporting if you will.

I am a co-founder of a rather unpopular human rights group and my experience there has taught me much.
One being that you cannot let ignorance go unchallenged. If you engage people in a friendly manner and are respectful, you can bring many around to a more open minded view where they may not agree with you 100% but, they will give you a fair chance to make your argument and give it due consideration. This simply does not happen if you cower in your herp room and hope no one notices or comes for your animals.
It never hurts to support groups like USARK or CanHerp either. Become a member or just donate, these groups need your financial support to keep working for your rights.

^^^ This brings up the point of displaying clearly when in public that you are a responsible herp enthusiast. Where I live none of my pets would survive in the wild but, for some this is a big concern. The same goes for those that keep hots where legal or the giants.
We already get enough bad press. What is needed is positive public interactions.
