When to change houses?

I tried the search engine but could not find an answer. I am having cage envy and I am starting to look at the t8 etc.

Right now Mr. mittens is 213 grams and just under two feet long. His glass tank is 20 inches long and 1 ft high.

When should is start thinking of moving him. I don't think I want to do a divider... Though I'm not exactly sure what my reason is for that.

When should I look into switching him over?

I think my main reason for looking are a) humidity issues ( though I seem to have that under control at the moment ) and b) getting a lock put on.

You can move him over at any time. I have put BP's that small into a divided T8 without any issues, and I doubt there would be any trouble with a full T8. As long as you provide proper temperatures/humidity and have enough hides/cover within the cage your Bp should do fine. Worst case you have to temporarily move back to your current cage for a little longer.

A rule of thumb is 1 square foot of tank space per foot of length of the snake.

If that is your only snake you plan on keeping, then I would suggest a 40 gallon tank once it out grows the current one. Assuming the width of the tank is about ten inches I would say you can keep him there until it reaches 1,000 grams. I keep my hatchlings to young adults in the ARS 1075 tubs and they measure 21.5"D X 9.5"W X 3.5"H. Giving that the measurements are almost identical I would say that's a good weight to go by.

However, if you plan on getting more animals down the road I would advise you to get a rack system. If you can build your own or have someone do it for you that will save you lots of money. Rack system can get expensive if you buy them but in my opinion are the best way to go.

When I first started keeping Ball Pythons I bought aquariums/tanks thinking it was the best thing for them. Little did I know I would have a hard time keeping up with the humidity. Not only that but when it came time to cleaning them it was a hassle getting those big things out and washing them down. Another down side was the space they would take up, oh boy do I wish I had a picture of how my room looked like. I had tanks everywhere!:rofl:

Animal Plastics T8 cage, a far better option than a 40 gallon tank. I put mine in one when she was ~250g, and she's done great in it.
