Snake buying questions

Hi guys,

So within the next couple of months or so my guy Kratos will be moving into a new tank, which means I have a tank opening for a new snake! The tank that is opening up is a simple 10 gallon. I was hoping for suggestions on a snake aside from a ball python that would live suitably in a 36x24x13 tank as an adult. Once again I am looking for an answer on an ADULT size even though ill buy him as a baby. I just dont have room in the future for a bigger tank than that.

Well, I don't know too many options for a full sized adult that would live comfortably in just a 10 gal for it's entire life. Although, a few have been mentioned. The only ones I can suggest are sand boas, but I don't know about the rest. I definitely wouldn't put any kind of python in a 10 gal...

Forgot to mention, have you thought about a lizard, or another reptile/amphibian??

Is that a 20 long? Sounds about like those dimensions. Besides a BP, there aren't many "big" snakes that can stay in a 20L. A female KSB, maybe a Caulker Cay Boa or Male Hog Island Boa. Depends. Some Hogs get bigger than others and might need a bigger tank. Um, a female Hognose can get to a decent size and they are adoooorable! :P

I'm pretty sure the OP was looking for an animal that could live in a tank with the dimensions 36"x24"x13". Those are not the dimensions of a ten gallon.

Perhaps, OP, we could get a clarification on the size of tank you are asking about?

Is that a custom 10 gallon? Those are some awesome dimensions on it. Why not try for a shallow reef tank? lol

This is what I read as well. I think the OP was going to use a 10gal as the baby cage and upgrade to the adult size. OP, please clarify!

** I know you are wanting the largest snake possible for this size enclosure, but please keep in mind that large snakes need large cages. As long as you are realistic and recognize that this type of enclosure will not house ANY "large" snake, you'll have some decent options.

Personally, I would NEVER put a BCI of any type, Hog Island or any other, in a 36" long enclosure for it's adult life. BCIs need room and a minimum enclosure for them would be a 48 x 24 x 18. And that is the minimum for the smallest localities and sub-species.

However, there are several snakes that would do well in a 36 x 24 x 13. Rosy and Sand boas were mentioned and these guys are great choices. I am not familiar with Spotted or Childrens pythons but I do know they stay quite small. Certain colubrids like garter snakes or the smaller locality milk snakes would do well.

If you have room to go taller but keep the same width x length footprint, you can go with a Green Tree Python or a Jungle or Irian Jaya Carpet Python. You'd only have to go to 24" high which isn't much. I keep my large adult male GTP in a 36 x 24 x 24 and he is a very happy camper. :gj:
