When you guys said mommas nest...

I didn't expect her to take all the bedding from the tub and build the great wall of China around herself in the corner of the tub. lol The male and other (very pregnant) female are sitting on the other side of the wall. I cracked up when I came home and saw her nest. Go big or go home I guess.

I'll post pictures of my first litter when they get their hair. They're five days old right now.

Did you get pics of it? I'm curious to see her nest :P

It's funny when they do that! Pretty good nest she has going. lol
I've had some whose "nest" consisted of actually clearing away all the bedding and putting the babies directly on the bare plastic floor! Go figure...

I have the occasional mama do that. I always feel bad for her cagemates who are subjected to the plastic tub floor.

She's been tunneling through it today so it's not longer a giant wall and the bedding is more spread out. I should of got a picture I'm sorry. :P If she rebuilds it I'll snap a picture. I felt so bad for the pregnant female having to lay on the plastic.

I use the rat breeding bins from LLLReptile for my preggo girls. The food hopper dips down into the enclosure, and the rats build up the bedding right to the hopper's bottom so they completely close themselves off from the rest of the bin! I expect litters this week, I'll take pics.

Its funny how the mommas have different nesting techniques, I hate it when they put babies on bare plastic like some do. And after you take the time to put all that bedding in the tub and they move it and sleep on the plastic lol especially when its cold,

I especially see first time moms do that. All the other rats look disgruntled about having no bedding at all!

I hate most when there's no nest and babies strewn all over. They still seem to feed them all fine and the babies do well but I just feel like they 'need' to be in a pile. LOL.

I find that too and put them back in the nest, but I think they do this because they want to make sure all get fed so they seperate them on purpose.
