    Vermiculite
I was wondering if vermiculite is supposed to have odor before placing eggs inside my egg tub. I have mixed in the water in the right ratio and my vermiculite almost smells like an air freshener?? Is this normal?

That does seem weird. Make sure you are 100% sure that it doesn't have fertilizer. What brand are you using? I use an organic perlite and it smells awful, but it smells like dirty wet gravel.

Thanks for the quick response. Yeah I bought mine last year cause I was expecting a couple clutches then I never got any. So I'm not sure what brand it is or anything. I will just try to get some new stuff tomorrow and make sure it's 100% fertilizer free. Thanks again :)

Yeah I stressed about mine like crazy before I used it, and even after I had a couple clutches hatch on it, lol. Just stay away from anything that says miracle grow. I found it really hard to find verm in my area without fertilizer.

    This is what I use

If you are using vermiculite instead of perlite remember to keep it damp.
It is almost impossible to get vermiculite in North America without asbestos in it. If you keep it damp and do not have dust clouds when dispensing or disposing of it though it shouldn't be a huge problem.

WHAT! I thought you could not use asbestos any more? Do you think the 100% vermiculite has any asbestos? I've been using it for years:confusd:

Looks like it may be true...Here is an interesting read. Scroll to the bottom for the gardening vermiculite.
