breeding, weight or age?

i have read many things and talked to breeders at expos i have been to, many say that the snakes should be a certain weight but others say wait at least 2 years. i guess im looking for opinions from both sides and if there what people have experienced. im looking to get my first male soon, but my female would not be ready for a while. i would just like to have a better understanding before i jump into anything to soon

Actually it is both.
Some people wait till 2 or 3 years old.
Weight ideas vary too but at least 1500g or more.
This is for females.

I have seen males go at 500g and just a couple months old.

yea i have heard people just breed their males when they're small like that, i know that its more important for females to be at the right weight.

A 2 month old male that is both 500g and breeding? Yeah right!:rolleyes:

It's a combination of body condition, age-maturity, and size.

It's not just a set weight. You have to look at the snake's body condition too. A mature short chunky female at 1200 grams is a better breeding candidate than a long skinny 1800 gram girl.
That 1200 gram girl has a better shot at enduring the breeding season with the better body condition and fat reserves than the skinny 1800 gram one. And some girls just never get large even though they can be a few years old.




There are breeders who have successfully had 150-250g males sire clutches. I personally would wait till a male was larger/older, but it's not unheard of for the small guys to breed.

I saw that you can breed a female at 2 years if she weight 1000 grams. Is that right? or does she have to be 1500?

I don't have any experience with this, but I personally wouldn't breed a 2 year old female at 1000g. I have two females, both close to 1000g, one is 1.5 years old and the other is a bit younger, and I wouldn't dare breed them right now. A 3 or 4 year old female that is short and stubby at 1000g? Maybe, but I'd still shy away from that. I believe its about the look of the snake more than the weight, and also how aggressive of a feeder they are.
