Is the top of the vivarium solid or screened? If its solid I would say you need at least a screen top, then you can cover as much as you need and uncover if its too much. Yes you need something to watch the humidity, it will help you out alot. What kind of set up do you have? What type of heating? If you could post pics it could help so we can understand more.
