Honestly, if I knew when I brought Ajja home that I would be spending this kind of cash on her, I wouldn't hesitate to do it again. I think the amount of time, effort, and money I've put into her environment, not to mention feeding, vet bills, and consumables, has EVERYTHING to do with her personality and temperament. The almost complete lack of stressors in her life give me the opportunity to see a lot of interesting behaviors and experience some interactions that I don't think I would be able to enjoy otherwise.

I started out the same way with my first. Its great seeing others that are just as enthusiastic:)

I can so relate. My husband and I often joke about how much money we've spent on a $30 snake. He's been worth every penny.

It's funny, when I got her, I just wanted to get a snake. I've always loved them, they're gorgeous, and the way they move like flowing water can entertain me for hours. I'm a complete nerd, though, so once I got her home, I devoured every bit of information I could find. Books, videos, articles, everything. The more I learned, the more interested I became in learning to recognize instinctive natural behaviors, and exploiting those behaviors to get her to do things that captive animals usually won't do. I firmly believe BP's are considerably more intelligent than we usually give them credit for.

Starting with the assumption that they're more intelligent, then recognizing natural behaviors and working WITH them while interacting with her daily, on her terms... I have a little monster who will eat from the palm of my hand, loves having her chubby cheeks scratched, and will curl up in my lap and sleep. Granted, it hasn't been a strictly scientific process, so I might have just gotten lucky. I'm hoping to try the same process with another species in the future, just to see if I can get the same results.
