A Coastal IS a Carpet python. A subspecies.
Coastals are Morelia spilota mcdowelli. Likely the largest subspecies of Carpet python. (According to wiki there is a documented male that measured 12.99 feet, large even for a Coastal male).
The smallest subspecies I am aware of is the Irian Jaya (Morelia spilota variegata, I have 2 of these) generally top out at the 6-7 foot mark but have been documented at over 9 feet.
I find they do not deserve their reputation( as prone to biting) at all. I think it is more a myth perpetuated by a few people wanting to look cooler by having a mean snake or that have only had experience with juveniles. I am in the process of taming out an essentially feral 6 footer atm and haven't been bit yet even though he does "talk" to me quite a bit when he isn't in the mood for my invasion of his space.

That's a Jungle Carpet Python, another subspecies with the same fate as Coastals. In fact, Coastals are often mixed with Jungles to achieve high yellow jaguars. Jungle x Coastal are the most common crosses and my understanding is that most carpets are part coastal and jungle. That all aside, you can still find fine specimens of both pure lineage and mixed decent.
Inland Reptile is a great site that provides both comprehensive information on carpets and he specializes in pure specimens that he offers for sale.
