Brandir says thank you to Brandir for this useful post....
Does having mad Rep mean anything? I guess I treat Thanks as the equivalent of the Facebook “Like” feature. I’m sure that’s not how it’s intended to be used, but that’s how I see it used most often.

I’ve seen more than a couple of people practically beg for it, like they’re going to be excommunicated if they don’t get their Rep up. Does it actually mean anything outside of the personal warm fuzzy feeling of knowing that someone paid attention to you? That sounded less crappy in my head. I mean, is there any consideration for it other than personal?

Is Rep used for anything like determining whether someone gets an infraction, or a temporary/permanent ban, is asked to be a Mod, etc?

It plays a part in some user ranks along with post count, time on the site etc.

But it has no input whatsoever on if you will get an infraction or consequences etc if you break the rules.

It's a legitimate question! I'm an inquisitive person, these are the kinds of questions that plague me. I'm not sleeping well, can't focus at work, space out while driving! My mind keeps going back to, "Thanks equals Rep. Yes. But what does is mean?!"

I think amount of rep is equivalent to the amount of time you procrastinate on here!

Well, to further confuse you, you can give thanks and reputation. Two different things. ;)

Yes. I believe you can thank someone then give them negative rep if you want.

It's supposed to be a way of saying 'thank you for that useful post' or 'I agree with you'. In addition there is a 'add to user reputation' button at the bottom of each post (I don't think this function shows up in tapatalk) where you can add a little note showing your appreciation. However with this function you can also add negative reputation which subtracts from the users reputation total. But only really mean people use it that way.
