Eye cap?...

Well. My spider ball python came to me with a wrinkle on his eye which I assume is a retained eye cap or two. I have 3 other balls from the same breeder and this was the only time I ever had an issue so no blame to him what so ever. He gave me advise (even offered to take it back). I decided I wanted to keep him. I tried letting him shed normally the next shed but I had not realized my wife was turning on ceiling fans in the room that summer and it was drying out my rack. So another bad shed for him.

So since then I have had one good shed but it didn't come off. I tried soaking for half an hour in warm water. No luck.

He just shed last night and everything came off. The dent or crease in his eye cap is less than it was but still there. Is there anything I can do about that to help or have I permanently damaged his eye?

I really didn't want to mess with the eye besides a warm soak and letting him crawl through a warm face cloth as per the advise of the breeder.

Customers at the store would sometimes bring in specimens with retained caps, I gave them a good soak, then just used a q-tip to gently rub the cap off. If it was more attached then I would use my thumb to rub it off.

I don't see anything wrong in the photo. But if there is denting, that just means your humidity is too low. If its still an eye cap, just make sure your humidity is up and whatever is left will come off with the next shed. Don't try to remove the cap yourself. It can do more harm than good. You don't want to accidently remove the live membrane, which unfortunately many unknowledgeable people have done. And that can permanently damage the eye and cause infection. And even possible blindness.

Yep, looks fairly ordinary to me as well, if not ideal. What is your humidity reading in her enclosure?

Hard to tell from the picture, but that may not be a retained cap. A small dent can mean the snake is dehydrated, and one of mine has a thin line on his eye where a live feeder got him when his prior owner had him. The top picture you posted looks like the same kind of damage.

It didn't come off when you soaked her because it's not a stuck eye-cap. A slight wrinkle on their eyes is usually a sign of dehydration, not a stuck eye cap. It's nothing to worry about long-term, it just means bump the humidity up. It will sort itself out with no harm to the snake.

Whoever the breeder is, they were very generous and understanding to offer to take her back. Props to them...

Well the wrinkle or dent is less than it used to be and the other eye is fine. Sorry the photos aren't better. The humidity has been 70-80% for a little while and I will keep it up. Hopefully that helps. I am watching for mild as well. We just went through mites a couples this ago so I am getting a taste of all these little disasters now lol. Everyone is healthy and happy eating regularly. Just need to make sure this eye cap or damage is taken care of as best as I can.

Thanks for all the help. I will be able to keep humidity around the 70% mark until he sheds again just to make sure he is hydrated.
