What does everyone think?

I want o start a business making custom cages and rack systems. I see there are alt of people who sell snakes but no so many sell their enclosures. Am i correct? I just want to know a little more about the competition i may up against thanks for your input.

I'd do more research. There are many...

You're also going to have to be able to complete multiple orders very quickly. Do you have the time for that? One extra long wait can cripple your chances for a repeat customer.

They can also get expensive real fast. It will take some engineering to come up with a rack system that will get you a profit out of the gate. More and more folks are building their own, so between that and having to compete with the big-namers.... well, its a gamble.

Yeah, I would think there's lots of competition.

Ok. I understand that I will have to keep up on the orders. I have a bit of time and I also have one of my friends that can and will help me if I needed him to also. so that wouldn't be a problem for me at all. I have also came up with designs already that will make me a profit right away. it not that heavy of a profit but its a profit. Im also not buying materials nor pricing the units I would be selling with the wholesale prices of supplies either so there would be a little more room right there too. and as for the competition there may be a lot out there but they are all big name companies that sell their product at ridiculous prices. I am pretty sure I can beat almost every one of them in prices. that's mainly just because I wont have the overhead they are looking at either. I don't plan on taking it nationally just locally so I wont be shipping anything as of yet. so that wil help with the work order. I work a full time job right now and want to start this on the side. but still witht he dead lines met. and if I needed help with the designing part I work at a place that makes custom fuel tanks and they have an auto cad program and they would let me play around with it if I needed to. so I got all that covered so far. im only coming up with one problem so far. getting people to buy them. I have had a few people who actually bought them but a lot were interested. I think its mainly the who "I am not a big name" thing. and really don't know how to market it or where to market it at. any help of that aspect would be great

I think a large part of it would depend on where you're located. As far as being a 'little guy', having a professional looking website and business cards can go a long way. And of course, exceptional customer service. Best bet IMO would be to go to as many shows as possible and market yourself. You can tap into the folks that are buying up new stock and they can take advantage of a locally made product at a great price. Win win :)

Ya thought about that important from.ill and there really are not that many shows arfound here in a reasonable distance tho either. i also thought bout going to a few pet shops that i really like and seeing if they wanted to carry them but that's also alt less profit important going to make
