Bleeding During Breeding?
I am breeding for the first time this year and recently paired up a female fire (about 1900 grams) with a firefly male and noticed that there is some smeared blood showing up after they have finished. This is the second time I have seen it when they are paired but I can't find any wounds on either of them to explain it. Any ideas what might be going on? I included a photo that shows a couple of the spots but there are more and they are more red than they appear in the photo.http://i1035.photobucket.com/albums/...psa5c3555e.jpg
Re: Bleeding During Breeding?
Hi,
Those are typically blood trails left by either the male or female dragging their genitalia across the substrate.
It's a good sign of breeding activity.

Yep, I notice the female doing it the most. Definitely freaked me out the first time!
Re: Bleeding During Breeding?
I'm so glad for posts like this. I've been a BP.net member for over a year now and I won't have my first pairing until next fall at the earliest. It's posts like this that are making sure I'm ready for anything like blood during mating, a temp spike/fall during incubation, a tied up umbilical cord, problem feeder babies etc. Thank you BP.net.
