Breeding Dumeril's

Aye, Everyone. The guy who sold me my Female Dum's has a male who will be ready to breed in about 8 months. I kind of want to do it.. I think I can learn, buy what I need and prepare enough to breed snakes in 8 months.
Anyways, has anyone here bred Dumeril's? I want some info on breeding them before I decide whether or not I'll do it. My mind is set on nothing specific. I'd love to hear from others who've bred Dumeril's (and that's all I'd like to hear in this thread, please & thank you). Btw, since I already bought his female, he said he'd gimme his male for $30. The male was there when I picked up my female, and the male seemed very docile, and in good health.
Wasn't in a bad shed, like Duma, my female was when I bought her.

May I suggest asking a Boa forum? Most people here are BP keepers and breeders.
I don't think I've seen a thread regarding boa breeding in ages.(if ever)

I don't know much about boa breeding other than they have live births.
But if you're thinking about breeding, make sure you have the resources and funds to care for the mother and hatchlings. Boas have pretty large litters. Ask yourself, can you house every baby in its own individual enclosure and feed every one for a few weeks minimum? Are there people who would buy your babies? If you can't rehome them, you have to be prepared to care for them for as long it takes to find a home, which can range from weeks to months to even possibly years.
If there are birthing complications, do you have a reptile specialized vet that can do emergency procedures? Can you afford emergency vet care?
Is your female of breeding size? If the babies don't eat, assist feeding may be needed.

Just all things to consider in regards to breeding. Good luck.

A female boa should be about 3-4 years old before breeding and about as big around as a 20oz bottle of soda. Dumerils are a bit heavier-bodied than Colombian BCI, so a little heavier and thicker than that soda bottle should be expected and probably better for them. When you say your female will be ready in 8 months, how old will that make her?? Females bred too young often slug out or have very poor litters and stillborns.

To emphasize one point Satomi made is that Dumerils are notoriously very difficult to get started feeding. Are you prepared to assist feed a whole litter until they begin eating on their own?

Something else to consider. Dumerils tend to be hard to sell. Is your female high pink? Have an unusual or rosette pattern? What about the male? Unless they are exceptionally beautiful animals themselves, they won't likely produce better than themselves and the babies will be that much harder to sell. Any animal that is worthy of being part of a breeding program should be an outstanding example of the species. Some pictures of your girl would help and also any pics of the prospective male too.

I'll just say what everybody else is thinking at this point. Please don't breed anything.

While I do agree with your sentiments, Neal, I cannot just discourage someone from trying their hands at breeding. We must cultivate, educate, and continue to mentor new people in this hobby. If no one tries breeding and finds out they enjoy it, the hobby will eventually die out.

BUT, as we've already stated, one must go about it responsibly and make sure they are prepared for ALL caveats related to the huge responsibility - which is why mentoring is SO important.

IIRC, I thought you'd said your dumeril's pattern wasn't particularly bright or something along those lines... Why do you want to breed her? I thought you were against flooding the market with normal or subpar animals? (These are genuine questions btw, not trying to be smart)

I personally think she's too small to breed currently and not the best example based on photos he's posted before. But then again, it could just be bad lighting....

OMG. I totally take back my last post.

To the OP, please please tell me you have a proper enclosure for your snake now???

If you can't take care of the snake properly (with appropriate enclosure and t-stat) and cannot think and act responsibly (as these two aforementioned threads so obviously indicate), then you have absolutely no business breeding ANYthing. I am sorry to sound harsh, but frankly I feel somewhat deceived now. :(

I would never encourage him to breed due to everything that has transpired with him since he joined the forums.

Putting his name and responsible in the same sentence is like putting gas to fire. Lol.
