'Bout time!

I have 5 Ball Pythons, one of whom is Roswell.

In the last year, Roz has eaten a total of 6 times. Last time she ate was 03-16-04.

She just refused everything I'd offer her. Live, stunned, frozen/thawed, mice & rats of different sizes.

Then it hit me.

The un-thinkable

The bad idea

Something kept telling me, "JUST SAY NO!"

But I couldn't ignore the possibilty of the "other" option. The no-no we all wonder about from time to time. Maybe even whisper about when we think nobody can hear.

That's right. I did it. I gave Roswell a small live GERBIL and she nailed it like you wouldn't believe!

So, have I done a bad thing? Maybe she's gonna be hooked on gerbils now. I'll have to take her to GA Meetings (Gerbils Annonymous), I'll have to stay up late with her and help her get through the nights of the shakes, the cold sweats, the irratability. Hopefully I will be able to get her onto CO2 stunned gerbils, then f/t. I don't care. I'll do what it takes as long as she eats.


Gerbils don't come cheap. And they don't breed all that good if you ask me. Roswell might turn out to be my "problem child" who may get hooked on gerbils. I just hope that this doesn't lead into "other" things. The hard stuff, hampsters!

:) Thats pretty funny! I'm glad she ate for you. You'll just have to wait and see if she only likes the "high test" food or if she will go back to regular old rats. I definitely wouldnt say its a bad thing, she ate .. thats always a positive.

mmm...I have the same situation here. Atreyu has gone on rat strike. I've had gerbils for 2 months. No babies. :roll: Dang critters.

haha i wish they ate hampsters i have two pain in the butt hamsters,i cant even hold them becuase they will try to kill me ! stupid little demons

If he is hooked on bp crack aka gerbils, get one and keep it as a pet. Before you feed a rat, take the gerbil out and let the rat run around in the gerbils bedding for an hour or so. That rat will then smell like a gerbil, and your bp will be tricked into taking the rat.

I tried breeding gerbils last fall. One of the females did prouce but then she didn't take care of them
and they all died. And so, turnabouts fair play.

I introduced her to my 9' ratsnake, Cassini.

I'm breeding two sets of gerbils and they are doing great. Have had about 6 litters so far in a couple months(the first pair) and the second pair has just been introduced to each other so no babies yet. My boyfriend's roommates BP will ONLY eat weaned gerbils, a couple at a time. So that's what we do, just so he will eat. Gerbils usually will stay together, the male and female raise the babies, and just so you don't bother mom and dad too much, they take care of business.

Oh, and ya'll who don't believe in feeding dog food to rodents instead of rodent food, I did a little experiment on mine.

My main pair and their babies got dog food and some veggies for a couple weeks, the babies were nice, fat and healthy and growing like nobody's business. Their hair coat was very shiny and they were active.

The next litter they had, I decided to switch them to the rodent food you would get at Petsmart with all the tiny seeds and other "stuff". I fed them on that for about 2 weeks, and now all of them have an unhealthy looking dull coat, and aren't as active. The babies are also not as big as the first litter mentioned in the same time span. They all just look, well, nappy. If you can picture that.

So I've decided that dog food and veggies is a great way for me to go. And besides, a big bag of 'Ol Roy will last a whole lot longer than that crap the pet store sells. Pardon my language. But is it... It's just crap.

I agree with ya about that; the bags of seeds labeled Rodent Food, are crap. This is because you are paying for the yummy edible part of the seed, yes, but also for that useless shell. I feed my rats these lab blocks I get at the local pet store; they're weird little cubes that supposedly have all the nutrients needed for happy little rats. No shell waste either. And my rats continuously give me litters of healthy babies to whack and freeze. :)

Yep, that's what we have at school to feed the rodents. Just my gerbils still look unhealthy on that stuff, so I give them some dog food every once in awhile. You can also go to a feed store and get Mazuri Rodent Chow, it's $11 here for 25 lbs. It's pretty good. My fancy rats are picky and will eat the large parrot food and unshelled peanuts first, then the lab blocks. But whatever gets 'em healthy right? :)
