any breeders ?

hey everyone, does anybody here breed there own guppies for thier ribbon/garter snakes ? although i have done it before i havent done it to feed anything so i bred a couple females and they had about 12 babies each,a few of them got eaten by my big fat female swortail but most of them survived but i gave them to a friend becuase my tank was a little over crowded so i guess my question is do you have any tips on breeding large amounts of fish and getting a breeding system started ?

You can use either 5 1/2 or 10 gallon tanks.. the larger holding more fish obviously. If you use a 10, get one or two males and 7-8 of the biggest female guppies you can find (bigger ones have more babies) you may even consider getting female fancy guppies from petsmart or somewhere, simply because they're typically much bigger than feeder guppies.

Then, get some aquarium plants, real or fake (floating ones are good, as are java ferns) to put in the tank for the newly born fry to hide in, then less will be eaten by the adult fish.

As soon as you see fry, put them in a breeder net (found at petsmart) This separates the fry from adults as they grow. When they're a month old, they can be put in with the rest of the fish.. and guppies typically have fry every month.

thanks shelby :) but i dumped the fish a few weeks ago, there was only two left (a neon tetra and an algae eater) and i coudlent sell them so i just put them down (you put them in a bag and put them in the freezer,they are dead in about a minute) Now roxy my ball python lives in there 39 gallon tank. but thanks for the advice anyways. :)

i just put my beautiful male platty down tonight. :( not because i didn't want him anymore but because he had some popeye going on and was just plain old. he started the whole laying on the bottom on his side thing when i got home so i knew that was about it for him. better to euthanize than for him to lay there suffering while the catfish kept rooting around him for food and freaking him out. oh well, he was my last male and i don't really want to breed them anymore anyhow. still a little sad though.

yep i know how that goes i had a male betta in my big tank and he had pop eye and i couldent stand to watch him suffer.so i put him down too,bettas never really do very well in big tanks.

i do feel kinda bad for putting down the last two fish for basicly no reason but i gave them a good life and plus i didnt plan on buying anymore tetras and they are schooling fish so that guy was pretty sad all byhimslef so i sent him to fishy heaven with the rest of his tank mates

That's what happened to my platy last night! I just got him about a week ago though.. I wonder if it was my fault, or if he was already sick. I don't have a heater on my tank though. Maybe that was what did it.

i dont have a heater in my tank but it stays plenty warm without one seeing as how i'm in georgia. i have a pretty strong plant light too though so that contributes a lot. they are pretty hardy though as far as fish go. he was probably sick already when you got him since he only lasted a week. that is one good thing about petsmart--they have a 2 week guarantee on their fish--and i have had to use it a few times. there's not a whole lot you can do if you happen to get a weak or sick one from the batch.

your sig is a little long, but definitely not the worst i've seen. you could separate your animals with commas or periods if you want. :)
