hog island stuck shed removal

I rescued a hog island adult male yesterday, hes about 5 feet and 4ish years old. Anyway, about half of his body has stuck shed. Whats the best approach to taking care of this? His stuck shed is a result of poor humidity. Should i buy the shed removal spray, give him a bath, or let him shed it off with his next shed? Ive never had an issue like this with my ball or corn, and since im new to boas id love some expert advice. Thanks in advance!

I'm not an expert, but I would think that letting the stuck stay on until the next shed is not the best idea :/

Personally i agree with you, id like to help him get it off i just dobt want to injure him in the process.

Put a bath towel into the bottom of a rubber tub big enough for your boa to move around in a bit. Add a few inches of water, temp in mid-80's F. Add boa, put lid on tub, and let him be for about 15 minutes. The warm water, humidity, and him moving on the towel should take a good bit of the stuck shed off.

Will give it a try, thanks! (yes ill add air holes and keep an eye on him so he doesnt drown and all)

If some does not come off is there any harm in letting it ride until the next shed??

As long as your humidity is solid, the stuck parts should come off with the next shed. I do suggest you do what was suggested above, but what ever is left should come off with the next shed! If you do the tub with a towel, you should post pictures after!!! Just keep us updated, can't wait to see him!

Thank you! he currently is strangling a rat, so im going to let him be for a few days so he can get it digested and all. Sunday I will take some pictures of the stuck shed for a before and after kinda deal.

Another question. Do boas like to explore more and hide less than balls? (I know balls hide basically 24/7) So far Every time ive seen him he is roaming. He is in the same enclosure he was in at the last owners house, so other than the roof hes kept under his housing hasn't really changed to cause any extra stress. do they just like to explore more??

Just FYI his caging is temporary, I already spoke with Ali at AP and have a T8 coming for him, all of that was discussed in this thread, Don't want anyone thinking he is going to be kept in poor conditions! lol

Neither my hogs really hide. Honestly most of my boas don't use hides other than perches. I don't think they care if it's in there or not. Last shed my big girl shed perfectly except for a bit of shed on her eye. I have no idea how she managed that since she shed in one piece minus the eye. However I just sprayed her down a bit for a few days and she did the rest on her own. If you don't want to bother him you could just spray him down a bit. Then I would soak him as mentioned before. Stuck shed always causes my guys to be grumpy butts.

I don't own a boa (Yet ;) haha looking forward to getting one) but I do own ball pythons. I have a new one whose a bumblebee and he is the goofiest little thing in the world. Sometimes he uses his hide sometimes he doesn't. Sometimes he sleeps on top of them and not in them. But every day at 6:00 right when the sun starts going down he's out of his hide (if he's in it in the first place) and he's roaming around playing in his tank. He's the most active ball python I have. He likes to climb on his vines and fall into his water bowl, I call it diving. I think he's gettin ready for the snake Olympics or something lol. He's a goober. But most of my older snakes that are 5+ years old don't roam their enclosures anymore but prefer to roam around in the house and outside. My ball pythons are pretty fun :) I can't wait to add a boa to the collection though they seem pretty cool to.

I had my biggest ball girl do that the shed before last, all perfect except the one eye....her next shed took care of it though and was all 1 big piece!!! I haven't had any stuck she'd issues since I first started, and even then it was very minor issues. Everything should be fine here, just glad he's in better hands now!!!
