Pied project
I am planning to start a pied project and I'm trying to decide if I should go with a male or female first. The result will be a double gene pied but it can only be made by breeding co-dom (a) pied to co-dom (b) pied. It could also be het pied. I know if I get a male I can breed multiple females to get the hets. I would also like to make visuals of the co-doms along the way. With that being said I want to figure which pied I need to reach the end result of (a)(b) pied thequickest. Hope that makes sense. :confusd:

Well the quickest method for you is going to be determined by how much you are willing to spend. I mean say you wanted to make pastel pieds. The best odds would come from a pastel pied(m) x pastel pied(f). This would give you at the very least all pieds with the chance of pastel pieds and also super pastel pieds. If that is too much for you then the next best option would be to get only one pastel pied and then the other just a pied. This again will at least get you all pieds but with the chance to also get pastel pieds. Once again if that is too much money then you could just get a pied and a pastel het for pied but your odds are quickly stretching from hitting exactly what you want to achieve. Whichever method you choose it would be wise to get the female first regardless as it is going to take a couple of years to grow her to breeding size assuming you are buying a hatchling or juvenile. Hope this helps. Obviously substitute pastel with whatever co-dom morph you are looking to create.

Thanks I forgot that breeding a visual to visual gets all visuals. I have only ever seen one of the visual co-doms listed before and it was very expensive so maybe I'll think about getting a male and female visual to start off.

Always start with the female, females takes longer to raise to breeding size and are generally ready to breed around 2 years of age.
Once your female is a year get a male for her.

If you already have the codom females you want to mix in. then get a male pied first to breed with them and make your own hets. if not then start with your females first.

visual female. Then get the male with the genes that you want to mix in. save the females from that clutch that have at least one of those genes for down the road. Pick the best male that you get. Ideally you get a male that got some of the sire's genes and breed him back to the visual female. Then you have the chance to hit visuals with the additional genes and you go from there. mixing in the first round of hets as they get up to size.
