How do you keep a snake during the summer?
Right now it's summer time in southern california. So without a heating device my snake tank got around 85 degrees F, today, on both the cool side and warm side. is that ok?
It's for my first ball python that i bought last sunday.

im keeping a 10 gal inside a 40 gal. (i know weird) cuz my 40 gal does not have a door yet. and i didnt realize how small the snake is compared to the tank. i have a medium uth under the 40 and i keep one side of the 10 gal on top of the heat pad. i only use it at night but since the heat pad gets too hot, im using a timer to turn on and off every 30 min since i dont have a thermostat yet.
the temp of the room is around the same as the cage's temp

That is an accident waiting to happen, you must buy a thermostat to control your heat source. You need to do so to prevent severe burns and possible fire hazard and house fire.
A thermostat is the single most important piece of equipment when it comes to husbandry, don't delay if you can't get it soon get a dimmer from Lowes or home depot.

does the thermostat and dimmer work the same way?

A reliable thermostat will continually adjust the temp for you.
A dimmer will restrict the wattage output, however it will allow greater fluctuation if the room temps are unstable which is why I recommend them as a temporary measure.

Similar. They are just a way to regulate voltage to the heating element. A dimmer requires you to pay very close attention to the heat and adjust accordingly, and a thermostat pays very close attention for you and adjusts as necessary.
Dimmers/rheostats work great if your houses ambient temps stay very steady.
Thermostats are a must if you inside temps swing a few degrees and up.
I personally use dimmers ATM with my flexwatt but I pay very close attention, and keep my ambient temps in my house VERY consistent. Ask my electric bill($1k+/mo)
