    Granite type??
I have been producing these granite/peppered looking babies for the last few years now. I never really thought is was genetic, but this year has me wondering. The reason I think they may be genetic is because this year I did some line breeding and again half the clutch was "granite" and the rest looked normal. I was not trying to line breed for the "granite" pattern, it just came out. I can only link it back to 2001 original male( who didn't have the granite look).

    Tell me what you think?

It may be genetic. These Mojave's are hatching today. The mother has the same bloodline as the father of the "granite type" in the first pic. I could be wrong, but I haven't seen any Mojave's with this much peppering on the sides. From 7 eggs I got 5 Mojaves and 2 have the peppered look.

Sorry for the pics. After they shed I will take better ones. Please tell me what you think.

I like the one in the top pic. :)
I also like the granite mojave. Two of my boys are granite, but only one has thrown any granite babies so far.

Granites work like this from what I've learned:

Granite is a trait, not necessarily one specific gene.

The Granite trait can be random or genetic, dom, co-dom, or even recessive.

Some markers are a clear belly, 'break' in the pattern behind the neck, and of course the black speckling.

Granite will also 'funkify' patterns which is why you hear some of the big breeders selecting animals that have genetic granite traits.

I hatched some out myself - there are pics at my facebook page linked in my signature.

I may not be parting with the "granite mojaves", but I do have a 2 "granites" from a different clutch for sale.

I gave a 2008 female with the same granite bloodline to my brother. He bred her to a yellowbelly this year( first time for her) and got a mix of yellowbellies and "granite" yellowbellies They look funky.

I'm thinking they are genetic, but I don't know if they are dominate or co-dominate. Other granite mojaves look totally different from mine. That's why I'm not sure if it's granite or something else.

Here are two yellow bellies that my brother hatched. The mother comes from the same "granite" blood line. The one on the right is believed to be a "granite" yellow belly.
