Snake Room Planning - Thoughts?

I'm in the infant stages of planning an actual snake room. I mean, I have one, but it just barely qualifies since I've only got two T8s and four snakes in there now. ;)

The guidance I'm looking for is, given a blank slate to start from, what is the general rule when deciding how many adult, grow-up, and hatchling tubs to purchase? I know the actual amount of tubs depends on the size of your collection, but I'm hoping for some sort of direction similar to "for every breeding female, it's a good idea to have xxxx hatchling tubs available". I don't want to end up getting too many tubs and waste money heating empties, but I really wouldn't want to run out of room for babies when they come (nice problem to have, but still a problem). For those of you who have settled in to your comfort zone and produce a handful or more clutches each year, what have you found works for you and what doesn't?

For actual tub sizes, I like the Vision tubs, and am leaning towards V-18s for hatchlings up to 400-500g, V-28s for growing up and some adults, and V-70s for the biggest of the bunch. Does this sound reasonable?

I know a lot of the consideration when planning a snake room revolves around the available space and animals you've got to work with, but I'm trying to get my ship pointed in the right direction while I've still got calm waters ahead. :)

When deciding how many hatchling bins I needed I considered how many females I have, or plan to have breeding in the current season. For example; if I have 10 breeder females, I assume each female will produce between 4 - 10 eggs. so I would need between 40 - 100 bins. I assume that I will be rid of some hatchlings before others hatch, but to be on the safe side I use this formula.

X - Y = Z/2
X = 100
Y = 40

100 - 40 = Z/2
60 = Z/2
60/2 = Z
30 = Z

THEREFORE

X-Z = A

A = the number of bins I should have

100 - 30 = A
A = 70

If I have 10 breeder females I will need 70 bins to be on the safe side, but you could probably get away with fewer bins.

Dude! You just went all Rube Goldberg on me! Seriously though, thanks. While a simple answer like "Females lay 7 eggs on average, so it's a good idea to have that may tubs available" would have sufficed, it was fun taking that little algebra trip with you. :rofl:

Oh, vision has V-28 tubs nowadays? Interesting...

You will have a lot of time (almost two months) to obtain baby racks and tubs from the time the eggs are laid. You could always wait and order when they are laid. Be sure to order from someone who can deliver within the time frame. ReptileBasics and Vision can deliver within the time needed.

Remember, just because you pair a female does not mean she will take and just because she lays eggs does not mean they all will hatch. I order my racks when the eggs are in the incubator and I see that I do not have enough rack space for all of the babies.
